Week one of being a brand new Second Lieutenant in the Army was a really strange experience. It was an awkward, confusing, exciting and boring week all at once. Some serious mental and emotional adjustments have had to happen. The Army is a small world and I am here with two people from college and 4 people who I was in Hawaii with. It has been fun to not only catch up with them but get to know some new people as well.
For those of you that don’t know, I am here for the Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC). It is a 7 week course plus a track phase for whatever your job is. The point of this course is assist us in our transition into the Army as an Army Medical officer. My course has everyone from direct commission officers (they have never had anything to do with the Army) to prior service soldiers with years of Army experience. It is cool being surrounded by other nurses, doctors, dentists, health service administrators, veterinarians ect. As far as BOLC goes, we didn’t really do much for the first two weeks besides a lot of paper work and classes on basic Army things. So lets just fast forward to the best part of the week… the weekends!
The past two weekends have been awesome. The first weekend our dear friends Tyler and Heather had their wedding just outside of Austin, Texas so Brady got to come hang out with me. Even though it had only been a few days since last seeing him, it was just what my heart needed. Everything is better when he is around. Since we didn’t have a lot of time we just decided to hit up the riverwalk for dinner and then go on a little boat tour. We made a quick stop at the Alamo and then ended up at Casa Rio, the oldest restaurant on the riverwalk. They had the best chips and salsa! After the boat tour we got to watch a laser show on the history of San Antonio at the San Fernando Cathedral. Saturday we drove up to Dripping Springs, Texas and enjoyed the wedding. My favorite part of the night was getting to see how beautiful Heather was and getting Brady to dance the night away with me. The weekend went by way to fast! 😦
The second weekend was spent getting to know some of my classmates a little better by going to a Chris Stapleton concert and dancing the night away at Cowboys dance hall. Chris Stapleton was of course amazing! I dare say he was even better than when I saw him in Colorado. Cowboy’s was everything I pictured a dance hall should be in Texas. Huge, lots of boots and a live band that was absolutely outstanding. So far BOLC (more so the weekends) have been a blast 😀
Have you ever been to San Antonio? Let me know what I need to go see.
Glad you get to explore your new surroundings, Kayla. You are adding to all the good things I have heard about San Antonio, but (sadly) never experienced in person (yet).

so far San Antonio has been a lot of fun. It is a beautiful city with a ton of history. The roads are crazy though! Unfortunately I haven’t been able to do a ton yet because of my training schedule.
