You are Your Own Worst Critic

A recent conversation with one of my girl friends has had me thinking about how hard it can be to feel like you are enough in today’s world. With social media being so popular and easy to access, it is so easy to compare yourself to someone else. There is always someone more popular, prettier, has a nicer house and what appears to be the perfect little family. I know that for me, after browsing the different social media platforms, I find myself wishing that I had thicker hair, clearer skin, better finger nails, a perfectly toned body and could keep my house perfectly clean at all times. I often have to pause, take a look around and realized that even though I destroy my fingernails because I pick at them, my face isn’t perfectly clear, I’ve gained an extra 20lbs, and my house is a mess, it’s alright. I may not have those things going for me at the moment but I do have many other good things going for me. Both the good and the not so good are the things that help make me unique.

One of my goals for this year was to find better balance in all of the different elements of my life. One of those things was to find a way to incorporate things I actually wanted to do into my busy schedule. For the past few months I have been attending yoga classes on Saturdays and the occasional Tuesday.  I have daubed in yoga for about 5 years but I have never been very consistent with it until now.

At the end of class each week I hear the saying, “My soul honors your soul.  I honor the place in you where the entire Universe resides.  I honor the light, love, truth, beauty and peace within you, because it is also within me.  In sharing these things we are united, we are the same, we are one. Namaste” Each week I think about how beautiful this quote is because it reminds me that even thought we are all different, we are the same. It helps remind me to be a little more kind and loving towards not only others but myself as well.

Embracing these super rosy cheeks after yoga.  These rosy cheeks are something I have never loved but am learning to love because they help make me unique.

You see, the beautiful thing about being human is that we are all imperfect. Social media only lets you see what people want you to see. No one wants to point out their imperfections even though we all have them. Take what you see with a grain of salt. Be nice to yourself and realized that even though you aren’t like those perfectly posed social media beauties, that is alright. You are striving to be the best you that you can be and that is beautiful.

  1. Your rosy cheeks are in your genes, dear, look at your Aunt, and your Grandpa Wayne, even your Great Grandpa Leonard. Love them, own them.
